Sensing Copenhagen
It was a chilly friday afternoon in September endings and I was relaxing from a few road trip days through northern Denmark. Totally devoted to the farm life, the fresh air, the healthy rhythm of everything but mostly…to the couch and dozens of delightful tea times!
It was the day when I received the happy news before arriving in Copenhagen within the next couple of days: a Copenhagen City Card kit was waiting for us in order to experience the place entirely! Happy news for a working blogger, trying to make my way through the world, through destinations and through experiences all over the world. I was a proud happy travel blogger that afternoon!
So we kept driving after resting those days at this farm in Lihme when suddenly we arrived: Wonderful Copenhagen.
Under a gray sky, between tons of dancing bikes around us and a set of colorful little buildings, we were ready to fall in love without knowing. On Monday at 10:00 am we went straight the office: Hello City Card! We are deeply thankful to Visit Copenhagen staff for giving us the key to their exciting city. It was now time to go for it, join us!
SENSE COPENHAGEN
Just like their slogan says: “Copenhagen: With arms wide open”…it undoubtedly was! We felt warmed up and hugged right away. Let me show you a glimpse through my senses around the city these days. Suggestions from my experience and hoping to get you inspired and thirsty for Copenhagen. Ready? Sense-mode ON:
TASTE a traditional danish daily breakfast or brunch with the fabulous baked rye bread (rugbrød) and their open sandwiches (smørrebrød), along with all its tasty and fun combinations. A very healthy option also on a budget. Want some inspirational ideas? Here. Don’t miss either the exquisite Frikadeller lunch dish and the Flødeboller bite of happiness…now I have to make an entire post on danish food soon, boy such good times eating here! Another hint around town on a budget is trying the chinese takeaway food stands…tasty too!
SMELL the fresh “smell of youth” throughout the exceptional town of Christiania: not to be missed! Good times around food, friends and mostly, pot. Yes, you read it right! Take a walk around (no pics allowed), feel free to grab some lunch and a beer, DON’T RUN no matter what, might set local’s alarm on, you don’t wanna do that. Did you know there is a whole residential area here too? AMAZING and unbelievable community here. Nothing like I have sensed before, not even in Hamburg or Amsterdam!
SEE the city by boat! To me is always a completely different city when I do some water ride. Here in Copenhagen you could feel in Amsterdam through the canals, or in Venice on a vaporetto ride. So many perfect experiences all in one city. Copenhagen, what did you do to me! Water is always magical but in Copenhagen, it does something else beyond that. And of course, don’t miss the opportunity of riding a bike around too. Transports here could take you to inimaginable places.
LISTEN to live jazz and jam sessions at night downtown! Quite popular and nice over some good quality-time beers. Night life in Copenhagen can be very relaxing and peaceful even with live music.
FEEL the friendliness of the danes, always willing to help over a kind smile. I was surprised and pleased on how polite and nice these people really are. Something that certainly makes a difference while moving around a new place. Also a splendid experience out of the common daily routine in this city: feel the rain! Go crazy on plastic boots and just drive a bike around. Go out and feel young under the soft danish rain. You’ll find the right time or better said…the right time will find you!
WHY A CITY CARD?
Are you a regular user of city cards when traveling? I was not! Until recently. Copenhagen’s card in’t the first city card I get to experience, so I can tell some differences among a few I have used as a traveler before. But definitely this one was the cherry on top of my trips.
Even though it seems like a lot of money at first for one day only or maybe 3, it is definitely a good deal to spend in one only payment. The total amount of money you REALLY spend when visiting a city is a lot more if you go paying thing by thing by yourself. You have probably discovered that by now, right?
City cards gives you a significant amount of free entrance to museums and a lot more must-see spots around the place, we all know it but for some reason many times we don’t really think about it. Definitely bucks to be saved there. Not to mention they include free transport almost every time! Also an important thing to take into consideration.
COPENHAGEN CITY CARD
This kit was very unique and complete among all the kits we’ve tried before. And I must say I am not trying to sell a product here, I gain nothing from talking about it, but really…a good product deserves good exposure and feedback. So that’s the reason of this mention here.
I had never been in Copenhagen before and it was my first-time everything around. A map might have done the job probably, but after having this experience, I changed my mind completely.
After traveling through Denmark with a rental car (via Carrentals UK), which was certainly the best thing to do out from the city and in a country where rail passes are expensive enough, we were convinced about how having the city card would make our lives easier. Not to worry about a thing, just showing the card every time and for everything. Easy to handle in your pocket, light enough to walk in comfort and also not to light enough to be lost in a second. And the best of all, we felt totally VIP!
When we got our kit, we had a very nice surprise on top of it: “Welcome Mariana :)/ Blogger Mariana Calleja – TravelThirst”
Inside we found the whole package ready to take us through the city. I gotta say…man, what a kit!
- Full map and anual city guide.
- Complete list of free entrance sites, even 1 hour away from downtown!
- Tons of discounts in several business around town: restaurants, bike rentals, accommodation and more.
- Guide to smartphone app…the best I have seen! You need to have this app the next time you’re in Copenhagen.
- All social media channels to follow up live too.
Copenhagen was certainly special, not to mention the entire country. One that really surprised me in such positive ways, teaching me more than I could have imagined from life and within different casual circumstances. Denmark is one spot along my travels that I will keep very present in my mind. Hopefully will be back there again someday!
Thank you to Visit Copenhagen-Wonderful Copenhagen for lending us a real and whole sensorial experience around the city. Definitely recommended to all travelers on their way to Copenhagen.

I loved Copenhagen when I went 10 years ago but I see from your post there are plenty of other things to see and eat! Hope to go back next year. :)
